The birth of Yamaha XJ Series started in late 1970’s with the XS650 Special Edition. The Yamaha Sport / Cruiser model introduced in 1980 was Yamaha XJ 650, however it was marketed under slightly different names on different markets. The US and North America had the Yamaha XJ 650 Maxim, while the European market received Yamaha XJ 650 Seca.
Both models had inline 4 cylinder, four stroke, air cooled 8 valve engine with 35mm Hitachi carburettors. The oil pump was located inside the crankcase and alternator was hidden behind the cylinders. The engine nested in a duplex cross-braced tube frame.
Some improvement to Yamaha XJ 650 was made in 1982 with new handlebars, air adjusted front forks and more comfortable seat. A tuned up Yamaha XJ 650 Seca Turbo also featured in James Bond movie Never Say Never Again.
In 1983 the Yamaha XJ 600 (FJ600 in US) and Yamaha XJ 900 entered the European market. With growing engine, larger carburettors were added (36mm), triple drum brakes fitted (two at the front and one at rear) and larger 22l tank was required. The drive also changed on the larger models from chain drive to shaft drive.
Diversification of Yamaha XJ Models
Several different versions of Yamaha XJ came off the manufacturing line in coming years:
- Yamaha XJ 550
- Yamaha XJ 400 – Naked version only
- The faired Yamaha XJ 600 S Diversion in 1992, known as Seca II in North America and Australia
- Yamaha XJ 600 N – Naked version
- Yamaha XJ 700 Maxim
- Yamaha XJ 750 Seca
- Yamaha XJ 900 S/GT – known as Diversion 900 in Europe and Seca XJ900RK in US
- Yamaha XJ 1100 Maxim – Known also as Yamaha XS Eleven in Europe
Yamaha Diversion motorcycles were very reliable and had a decent fuel consumption. No wonder they became popular by Police departments all around the world. Yamaha catered for that interest and made special editions for every Police department based on their requirements.
In 2009 the old Yamaha XJ made another leap forward transforming into liquid cooled, 16 valve 4 stroke Yamaha XJ6.
Yamaha XJ Parts
As Yamaha motorcycles evolved so did their parts. Some Yamaha XJ parts are still available directly from Yamaha because they are used on today's' models, production of others have stopped all together.
